Where a fire extinguisher is to be placed on board of a ship, it must meet the requirements described in the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulations 2019 (MER) the corresponding UK regulation of the European Marine Equipment Directive.
Unlike many other areas where new UK regulations will not be mandatory until 1st January 2025 (or later), the MER is enforceable in the UK from the 1st January 2023.
The old MED is no longer applicable to new products in the UK.
